Master degree programs

1. Masters of Medicine(MMed)

The College of Medicine (CoM) offers the Masters of Medicine (MMed) degree programmes which enables clinicians to specialize in the following clinical disciplines; Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Child Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Ophthalmology, Family Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat), Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry. Besides clinical training, MMED students are required to conduct research in specific topics relevant to their areas of specialization and submit a dissertation. Thus, our MMed graduates are expected to become leaders in the clinical management of patients but also generate novel ways of managing patients through clinical research.

The normal duration of the MMed programmes is 4 years although, but students may be permitted to complete the programme in 7 years, depending on their personal circumstances and the nature of the programme. Details for each MMed programme can be found in the CoM MMed regulations. Additional information can also be obtained from the relevant Head of Department.

Interested MMed applicants must fulfill the following requirements;

  • Possess a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree or its equivalent from any recognized university
  • Be registered with the Malawi Medical Council as a Medical Practitioner
  • Have at least one year clinical experience after completing clinical internship.

All applications must be submitted through the Admission Office all year round. Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews. Successful MMED applicants can commence their studies in March or September every year.

2. Master of Public Health(MPH)

This is a 2-year block-release program. Applicants for this program may choose to major in Health Management, Bioethics, Epidemiology, Reproductive Health, Nutrition or Bioinformatics. for more details visit MPH website
